China’s most popular electric vehicle, the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, has spawned an eye-catching new concept that looks like it was designed in the 1950s.
The new retro-inspired design of the Mini EV drastically alters its appearance but interestingly, it wasn’t created in-house by the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture. Instead, it has been dreamed up by a third party and shared across social media by the car manufacturer. It is uncertain if it will translate into a production model.
The front of the concept immediately catches the eye thanks to the round headlights complete with LED daytime running lights and subtle body-colored shrouds. The EV has also been equipped with an oval-shaped grille and has a retro chrome-finished front bumper.

Elsewhere, the two-tone design of the unique Hongguang Mini EV will no doubt catch your eye, as will the aerodynamic wheel covers. Other unique elements of the EV include the chrome wing mirrors, the roof racks and luggage carrier, as well as a revised rear fascia with a chrome bumper. The EV even features a small wooden basket on the tailgate.
A handful of changes have also been made to the interior of the car that rocks the same two-tone theme as the exterior and has a large infotainment screen in the center of the dashboard.
While it is unclear if a Hongguang Mini EV variant that looks like this will hit the market, SAIC-GM-Wuling has shown a willingness to have fun with the car’s design and already offers it in a number of different guises. In March, the Mini EV Gameboy Edition started to reach dealerships, while production of a convertible version will commence later this year.
