Cupra’s upcoming sub-compact electric hatch has taken one more step towards production with the latest UrbanRebel concept. Previously shown as a massive-winged, highly exaggerated show car, the EV is now being presented as a more sober model that would be appropriate for public roads.

The UrbanRebel is more than just a car to CUPRA. This is the model that will democratize urban electric mobility,” said Wayne Griffiths, Cupra CEO. “We prove that electric cars don’t have to be boring. This will be the next generation’s entry into our range.”

Powered by a 223 hp (166 kW/226 PS) electric motor, the car will be based on the MEB platform, like the Born and the VW ID.3. Unlike those models, though, the UrbanRebel’s electric motor will power its front wheels.

Thanks to the use of lightweight materials – Cupra says that it used 3D printed and 3D knitted manufacturing processes to make this concept – it will still be able to go from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in just 6.9 seconds, which is pretty similar to the VW Polo GTI.

Cupra also claims that the UrbanRebel, despite measuring in at just 13 feet (4,030 mm) long, will be capable of going up to 273 miles (440 km) on a single charge. The larger Cupra Born, for reference, is rated at up to 335 miles (539 km) on the WLTP test cycle.

The interior, meanwhile, makes it clear that Cupra wants the UrbanRebel to be a premium compact. With a big, curved infotainment screen, and an elaborate instrument cluster, the car features plenty of impressive tech. The steering wheel, meanwhile, has game-controller-like buttons, which suggests that it’s being marketed toward a younger audience.

Cupra said that the concept seen here is 95 percent representative of the production vehicle that will be launched in 2025. It expects to build the UrbanRebel in Martorell, Spain.

“This will be the next generation’s entry into our range,” said Griffiths. “Emotional, sexy, and fun to drive and at the same time accessible.”
