While the age of electrification is truly upon us, in the U.S. car manufacturers haven’t agreed to standardized charging cable connectors, which can be frustrating for owners. In a somewhat surprising move, Ford took the liberty to equip the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning with a standard accessory component allowing power from the onboard Pro Power generator to charge Tesla models that have their own proprietary connection.

The news was shared in the Lightning Owners forum by user PipeFitter52 who discovered the special item shortly after taking delivery of his electric pickup: “I took delivery of my 2022 Lightning and as I’m going through the included items I found an adapter to charge Teslas. Interesting find. If I find any dead Teslas I’ll let my Ford Lightning come to the rescue”.

The part is an aftermarket Lenz J1772 adapter that you can easily find and purchase online. As noted on the box, it is “compatible with all Tesla models”, meaning that you can plug any Model S, 3, X, or Y with a dead battery on the generator of your Ford F-150, saving the day. This feature is in line with Jim Farley’s comments during the launch of the F-150 Lightning: “if the power goes out you can charge your neighbour’s Tesla”. Forum user ChasingCoral suggested they should add “Tesla Rescue Squad” bumper stickers on their trucks since they are capable of offering free roadside assistance.

Besides the Tesla charger, among the items that come with every new Lightning is a second adapter built by Parkworld that is compatible with all Ford mobile chargers. This means that all F-150 Lighninings are potential charging stations for other EVs.

The Pro Power onboard generator that is available on the F-150 Lightning and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid can provide 20 miles (32 km) of range in a Mach-E for every hour of charging, or 13 miles (21 km) in another F-150 Lightning. We guess that the 240-volt outlet will provide a similar amount of range to any Tesla. Ford says that the onboard generator can fully power a home for up to three days.
