Imagine, for a moment, that you have a racing car. You can’t really drive it to the track, or you’re not so inclined even if you could. So what are you going to do?
Why, you’re going to get a transporter, that’s what. Probably a pickup with either a trailer in tow or a bed on the back modified to carry the car you need to haul. But if it’s a classic car, you’ll want the classic truck to go with it. And for a vintage Cobra, this will be the one you want.
It’s a 1966 Ford F-350 that looks like it’s been hauling Shelby roadsters, modified Mustangs, and GT40s for decades now. But in fact it’s only been doing it for five years.
That’s how long ago it was converted – to look of the same vintage, mind you, as the car on the back. In the process, it was fitted with the 5.8-liter V8 from a ’96 Ford truck, complete with modern ECU, front disc brakes, cruise control, and automatic transmission.
In between the three-across bench-seat cab and the bed for the car in the back, it’s been fitted with a small sleeper compartment, with a carpeted berth, a fold-down seat, and even a little sink. Not the kind of space, in short, that you’d want to live in long-term, but enough to let you camp out by the side of the track at a vintage racing event instead of having to find a hotel nearby.
The owner in the UK apparently had it commissioned, complete with racing stripes and logos, to carry his classic Shelby Mustang GT350 to such events. Like the Goodwood Revival, where it’s said to have been a hit. But now it could be yours, if you’re in the market.
Silverstone Auctions had it consigned for its Race Retro sale this weekend. But having evidently failed to sell, it’s now offered for £43,700. That’s about $60k, give or take, at current exchange rates, or about the US sticker price on a new F-350 Platinum.
