Car thieves continue to target factories across Metro Detroit and their latest victim was Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly plant.

According to Michigan State Police, Flat Rock Police notified the Detroit Regional Communications Center that four to five Mustangs had been stolen from the plant early Thursday morning.

This put multiple police agencies on alert and officers from the nearby city of Woodhaven spotted the thieves attempting to fill up the stolen pony cars. Unfortunately, they fled after seeing police and officers decided against engaging in a pursuit.

A short time later, Michigan State Police troopers “observed the Mustangs speed by” while stationed on I-75. They attempted to stop the vehicles, but a pursuit ensued. With multiple stolen cars to deal with, the troopers decided to focus on a stolen Shelby GT500 and followed it until it ran out of gas on I-96.

Michigan State Police said the driver drove the Mustang up a grass embankment and a trooper positioned his vehicle to prevent the Shelby from “rolling back onto the freeway.” This caused “minor” damage to the patrol car, but the driver was taken into custody without incident.

Sometime later, a tow truck driver notified authorities about an orange Shelby GT500 that was abandoned on I-75. Another Shelby GT500 was found by Detroit police and authorities believe both cars were abandoned after running out of gas. While those drivers got away, detectives have plenty of questions for the suspect in custody.

The theft is just the latest in a string of incidents involving plants in southeast Michigan. Four Shelby GT500s were stolen from Flat Rock Assembly back in December, while four Ram 1500s were taken from Sterling Heights Assembly in March. Farther north, five Camaros were taken from Lansing Grand River Assembly in May.
