The Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK is in full swing and the car-lover’s event has played host to the BMW M3 Touring’s dynamic debut. Shown off in BMW’s historic Daytona Violet metallic paint which is a shade of purple, it also got its first opportunity to run up the event’s famed hillclimb course. Having graced the body panels of BMWs since the E36 M3, the color was no doubt deliberately chosen to help celebrate the M performance division’s 50th anniversary.

Driven by the Duke of Richmond, who ought to be pretty familiar with the track since it’s also his driveway, the performance wagon was the first to run the course in 2022. As a result of the very British weather, though, the drive didn’t quite show off the M3 Touring’s full capabilities.

“Fabulous to be the first person to drive it up the hill,” said the Duke of his drive. “Loved it! Really good, I mean, the gearbox was wonderful. Going up and down the gears all on its own, it sounded like I was doing perfect shifts all the way up. We started off a bit slow but, you know, better to be safe than silly.”

The Duke of Richmond, then, is not espousing the design principles behind modern BMWs. Playing it safe, though, is not always best, as was shown by one of the M3 Tourings chosen for the static unveiling earlier in the day.

Fully revealed just this week, the 2023 BMW M3 Touring is the first ever factory M3 wagon. It’s powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that makes 503 hp (375 kW/510 PS) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque that goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed Duke-of-Richmond-flattering automatic transmission, which is the only gearbox available. That all allows it to his 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.6-seconds before reaching a top speed of 174 mph (280 km/h).

Sadly not for sale in America, the M3 Touring will go into production this fall and will be sold in Europe and Australia.
