Volkswagen has released the 2023 ID. Aero, its first all-electric luxury sedan, and a car designed to go head-to-head with the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4.
Following on from pseudo SUVs like the ID.4 and ID.5, the ID.3 hatch, and the ID. Buzz minivan, the Aero is a four-door fastback that will be built in China for the Chinese market from 2023. But that same year Volkswagen will announce a version tailored to American and European tastes and built in Germany at its Emden plant.
Described by Volkswagen as a premium mid-sized sedan for upper-model class Chinese families, the ID. Aero transfers the existing ID design language into a coupe-style sedan shape with a long wheelbase that promises plenty of interior space. The front end’s defining features are its slim LED Matrix headlights and the light bar that extends across the width of the nose, while the rear end also gets a full-width light treatment, giving an Audi Sportback look to the Aero.
The profile reveals a pronounced kick-up in the waistline, something not seen in VW’s gas-powered cars, and the surprisingly rounded arches are stuffed full up 22-inch wheels with a turbine design. As for the interior, you’ll have to use your imagination because VW hasn’t given us any images.

The Aero’s body lives up to the car’s slippery name with a drag coefficient of 0.23. It’s built around the same MEB electric vehicle architecture found under the other ID. cars, features a 77 kWh battery, and, though VW isn’t revealing much about the motors, we can assume they’ll be ones already available in its EV sister vehicles.
There are no performance figures available but Volkswagen does highlight a WLTP EV range of up to 385 miles (620 km), which would make the ID. Aero considerably longer-legged than other IDs, some of which are rated at less than 300 miles (483 km).
