Not counting the recently unveiled new-gen Roadster or the upcoming Semi, Tesla actually has three vehicles available in its boutique showrooms: the Model S executive saloon, the Model X SUV and the Model 3 compact sedan.
The latter is also the newest of the three, having been unveiled almost two years ago and delayed for what seemed like an eternity to those that went ahead and reserved it right away.
Well, the Tesla Model 3 is finally here, and since the public continues to be hyped about it, Consumer Reports went ahead and bought one of their own. Normally starting at a promised $35,000, their example came at a rather steep $59,000, as it features the $9,000 long-range battery, AutoPilot and other options.
What it doesn’t have is an all-wheel drive system, but at least their EV should travel for up to 310 miles (499km) on a single charge, or at least what EPA ratings claim.
So, what is it like to drive? In short, not that bad: the steering is quick and responsive, the suspension is good although it doesn’t absorb bumps that well, and the driving position is said to be “fantastic”.
There are some drawbacks, too, such as the wind noise at highway speeds, low-positioned rear bench that results in uncomfortable knee bend for adults, and some visibility issues.
Contrary to previous reports that pointed out quality issues, the interior of the car appears to be well made, with plenty of suede and wood trim, leather and that gigantic 15-inch screen that controls and displays most functions.
CS promises to come back with more feedback on their Tesla Model 3 as they continue to put miles on it, but until then, let’s see what else they have to say about it in the video right below.
