The streaming wars show no sign of slowing down, but Disney is the undisputed juggernaut thanks to assets such as Marvel and Star Wars.
However, that’s just scratching the surface as the company has nearly a century’s worth of characters and films at their disposal. They’re now reaching into that vast vault to bring fans back to the world of Cars as a new series, Cars on the Road, will hit Disney+ on September 8th.
The show reunites Lightning McQueen and Mater, both voiced by original actors Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy, as they embark on a cross-country road trip to meet up with Mater’s sister. The series spans nine episodes and director Steve Purcell described it as a “romp across the country with Lightning McQueen and Mater,” who experience mini-adventures as well as “unexpected twists and turns.”

That’s clear from the trailer as it shows the two encountering ghosts, a dinosaur, a circus, and a monster truck rally. The clip also teases a truck stop showdown and a spoof of Mad Max: Fury Road.
Little else is known about the series at this point, but the first Cars film was released in 2006 and became a huge hit as it made approximately $462 (£379 / €454) million worldwide. It was followed by Cars 2 in 2011, which made nearly $559 (£458 / €549) million worldwide despite being panned by critics and audiences. Cars 3 was released six years later and marked a return to form, but it was the worst performing movie with a worldwide haul of nearly $384 (£315 / €377) million.
