Jeep’s New Recon Is A Trail-Ready Electric Wrangler Alternative Coming In 2024

Life for anyone thinking about buying a Jeep Wrangler just got a whole lot tougher and not only because Ford’s Bronco has proved a worthy foil. Jeep announced today that the Wrangler will be joined by an all-electric cousin called the Recon in 2024.

The news came out of Jeep’s 4xe Day, an event where the company revealed it would be bringing four new electric SUVs to market in Europe and the U.S., including a Wagoneer S luxury electric off-roader, and a Europe-only baby EV called the Avenger to sit below the Renegade.

Both the Wagoneer S and the Recon will use the same Stellantis STLA electric vehicle platform, but while the Wagoneer has its sights firmly set on luxury urban buyers, the Recon is a genuine trail machine with removable doors and exposed hinges.

Jeep hasn’t outlined much in the way of technical specs for the Recon, but it has said the Wagoneer S will get a 600 hp (608 PS) powertrain that should help it demolish the zero to 60 mph (92 km/h) sprint in 3.5 seconds, while the unspecified battery would allow a generous driving range of 400 miles (644 km) on one charge.

The company did make clear that the Recon was designed from the ground up to be a Jeep 4×4, and isn’t merely a regular electric passenger car styled to look broadly like a Wrangler, which will remain on sale. Trail-friendly equipment will include Jeep Selec-Terrain traction management, e-locker axle technology, stout underbody protection, tow hooks, and aggressive off-road tires.

The Recon will also get a one-touch power roof and the latest generation of Jeep’s Connect infotainment system that includes detailed travel guides of popular overland trails, including the mighty Rubicon.

“The all-new, all-electric Jeep Recon has the capability to cross the mighty Rubicon Trail, one of the most challenging off-road trails in the U.S. and reach the end of the trail with enough range to drive back to town and recharge,” says Jeep’s CEO, Christian Meunier.

Both the Recon and the Wagoneer S will be available to order from early 2023 with production starting in 2024. And unlike the little Avenger, both bigger Jeep EVs will be available in Europe and North America.
