Despite having been installed as CEO of Bugatti on the strength of the electric supercar manufacturer that bears his name, Mate Rimac said this week that the French automaker is not planning on making an EV this decade.

“A purely electric version is not included in our ten-year plan for Bugatti,” Rimac told Automobilewoche. “There will also be no SUV.”

That means that, unlike the rest of the Volkswagen empire, the ultra-luxury brand will not require its well-heeled customers to opt for an all-electric drivetrain. That’s not to say, however, that there will be no electrification whatsoever.

Bugatti’s next generation of vehicles may include some degree of hybridization, Rimac told the German outlet. More specifically, the brand’s next car is likely to be a plug-in hybrid because the CEO wants the vehicles to have a usable electric range.

Although the supercar segment is no stranger to plug-in hybrids today, the executive doesn’t seem to rate the current class highly. Whereas the Ferrari SF90 and 296 GTB offer up to 25 km (15 miles) of electric range, the McLaren Artura offer just 19 km (12 miles).

Rimac, meanwhile, said he wants a Bugatti hybrid to have up to 50 km (31 miles) of range to make it more useful to its customers. Late last month, Bugatti’s design director was quoted saying that the Chiron‘s successor will not feature the brand’s trademark W16 engine. Instead, it will be powered by a smaller, electrified powertrain unit that allows for a “more athletic shape.”

As it is resisting the industry-wide trend towards battery power alone, Bugatti will also buck a trend among high-end automakers towards SUVs. With Aston Martin, Porsche, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and even Ferrari all bending to the pressure of a marketplace obsessed with sport utility vehicles, Bugatti will be a notable holdout, which should please some enthusiasts.
