Pickup trucks might have started out as utilitarian work vehicles but now, more than ever before, they’re capable of providing big smiles. The Ford Maverick has proven that it can be both practical and fun and in a new video we see a lightly tuned unit set a new drag racing record. And that new record speed makes this tuned little truck a lot quicker than some cars that are specifically built for speed.

First noticed by the folks over at The Drive, this Ford Maverick belongs to David Buschur, the man at the helm of Burschurs LLC. The company specializes in performance parts that make all sorts of different cars faster than they are in stock form. This particular Maverick managed to do the quarter-mile shuffle in just 13.565 seconds and it isn’t built to the moon yet either.

Its modification list includes a catch can, a front-mount intercooler, a 3-inch intake, a cat-back exhaust, and a tune to optimize all of those modifications on 93-octane pump gas. While there’s no mention of current horsepower levels, we do know that last year, Buschur found that the intake alone netted him some 26 whp (19 kW) and 17 lb-ft (23 Nm) of torque.

It’s also worth noting that there’s certainly more room for improvement on that quarter-mile time. Buschurs LLC could add a more capable turbocharger and throw some E85 in the mix as well. Of course, before doing that, this little truck is already very fast compared to a lot of other fast cars.

The stock versions of the Kia Stinger GT, the Mercedes EQS 450+, the Subaru WRX, and the BMW 230i M-Sport Coupe are all slower than this Maverick. And none of them can carry all the gear that this thing can.

For his part, Buschur isn’t content with just making this truck quick in a straight line. He’s also posted videos of this same truck at Autocross events. We can’t wait to see how fast tuners end up making the Maverick and we’re grateful that its ECU isn’t locked down like the upcoming Mustang’s will be.
