Following the debut of the all-new BMW X1 in ICE-powered, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric (iX1) variants, the Bavarian automaker is ready to introduce the sportier-looking X2. Our spy photographers have already caught prototypes of the SUV with a combustion engine, but today they spotted the electric iX2 testing on public roads.

Despite the camouflage that is covering every inch of the bodywork, the zero-emission nature of the prototype is evident from the lack of tailpipes, the covered kidney grille, and the “Electrified Vehicle” sticker on the tailgate.

Besides the model-specific grille, we expect the iX2 to feature the usual blue accents that BMW uses to differentiate EVs from their ICE-powered counterparts. The rest of the bodywork will be shared with the other versions of the X2, including the coupe-style roofline that is a lot more dramatic compared to its predecessor, and the pronounced shoulders.

The iX2 is expected to share its EV underpinnings with the iX1 although the more aerodynamic body could result in a slight increase in the available range. Note that the BMW iX1 xDrive30 comes fitted with dual electric motors producing a combined 308 hp (230 kW / 313 PS) and 494 Nm (364 lb-ft) of torque, plus a 64.7 kWh battery. This AWD setup sounds perfect for the iX2 which could also gain a cheaper and less powerful FWD variant in the future. This is also the first time we’ll see a fully electric X2.

The BMW iX2 is expected to debut together with the entire X2 range sometime in 2023 as a 2024 MY. BMW is not going to bring the iX1 stateside so it is unclear if the iX2 will cross the Atlantic.
