Mazda today confirmed that the upcoming CX-90 SUV will be powered by an inline six-cylinder engine, with a teaser image posted to Instagram. Still cloaked in darkness, few other details can be gleaned about the big SUV designed specifically for the North American market.

Part of a big SUV push for the brand, the new CX-90 is one of five new SUVs that are developed by Mazda. The CX-90, the CX-70, and CX-50 are designed primarily for the North American market, and are wider and larger than the CX-60 and CX-70, which are designed for Europe’s tighter roads, and were announced at the same time as the North American market models.

At the time, the automaker suggested that the CX-90, along with the CX-70, would be powered by a turbocharged inline-six gas engine, and that has now been confirmed. It was also suggested that they might get plug-in hybrid powertrains, because Mazda has committed to electrifying its entire vehicle lineup by 2030. We don’t know the details yet, but in Europe, the CX-80’s plug-in hybrid will pair a four-cylinder gas engine to an electric motor.

It’s unclear if the CX-90 will replace the CX-9, which was introduced in 2015 or be sold alongside it. The CX-50, for example, was designed to be sold alongside the CX-5.

Mazda previously confirmed that the 2024 CX-90 will be a three-row SUV, much like the CX-9. It is also intended to win over customers in markets “where larger models with a big presence are preferred.”

“As a result of a commitment to our craft, and years of meticulous dedication to the people we serve, comes a grand pinnacle of everything we believe in and strive for,” Mazda writes of the CX-90 on its website. “An elegant, bold and powerful instrument of emotion, crafted and designed to curate and enhance every experience you share with it—inside and out.”

Very little of the design of the CX-90 is revealed in this teaser, but the automaker promises that it will represent its “boldest expression of Mazda design to date.” It adds that the new model is coming in 2023, likely as an MY2024 vehicle.
