The very first Ford Mustang to ever feature independent rear suspension was the SVT Cobra R. It laid the groundwork for every high-performance pony car that came after it. Now, one of the 300, built for the year 2000, is up for sale and has less than 33,000 miles.
This particular example is number 268 of the 300. Just like all of the others when new, it packs a naturally-aspirated V8 with 385 hp (287 kW) and 385 lb-ft (521 Nm) of torque under the hood.
It sends that power to the rear wheels only via a six-speed Tremec manual transmission. It might not sound like much when compared to today’s Mustang GT500, but back in 2000, this was a groundbreaking sports car boasting more torque and nearly as much horsepower as a Ferrari 360 Modena.

It’s important to note just how much Ford did to make sure that it could handle all that power. This car came stock with Brembo brakes. The fog lights were removed in favor of brake cooling ducts. It even has a fuel cell and side-exit exhausts. And again, it has an independent rear suspension and a Tremec transmission.
All of these changes made the Mustang SVT Cobra R a seriously capable track performer. This one that’s up for auction here has about 32,000 miles on the odometer and has evidently lived in southern California for most of its life. It comes with a clean Carfax and a bunch of original documentation about the car and its rarity.
One of those documents is a black binder full of information about the build. The binder is special because owners could only get it after registering the car and sending proof to Ford.
While SVT Cobra Rs might remind some of the tuner and modding culture of its era this one has only a few very tasteful changes from its stock form. That includes a Pioneer radio, JBL speakers, Simpson Racing harnesses, and a fire extinguisher. It’s a great example of one of the most important Mustangs ever let out of the barn.
