The R1T pickup is Rivian’s first vehicle, and it has earned the company its inaugural Top Safety Pick+ award. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released the results of its crash testing for the vehicle and found that it earns top marks across the board.

In terms of small overlap crash testing on both the driver’s and passenger’s sides, the truck earns the highest “Good” rating. It does so in tests of moderate overlap crashes, side crashes, roof strength, and head restraints, too.

Its headlights are also rated as “Good” (not a given in the realm of pickup trucks), while its front crash prevention system is rated as “Superior” (the highest possible result in that category) for both vehicles and pedestrians. Even the ease of use of the latch system for seat belts and child restraints is rated as “Good.”

In fact, it gets “Good” ratings in all crash worthiness and crash avoidance categories, and all 40 subcategories, too, barring one. The only “Acceptable” rating (the second-best result possible) it receives is in “rear passenger head protection” during a side collision.

That the Rivian R1T earns “Good” ratings in all six crash worthiness evaluations, as well as earning Superior ratings for its crash prevention technologies, in addition to getting “Good” headlights as standard, means that it earns the IIHS’s highest possible award of a “Top Safety Pick+.”

Endowed with a battery pack of up to 180 kWh, the Rivian R1T can go up to 400 miles (643 km) per charge. Thanks to the use of up to three motors, meanwhile, it can accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just three seconds.

Unfortunately, that quality hasn’t come quickly. Although Rivian said this fall that it was on track to deliver 25,000 vehicles in 2022, its launch has been marked by delays and difficulties as it has dealt with the challenges of ramping up production.
