Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers has made the audacious assertion that the Project One hypercar could beat the outright Nurburgring lap record, Autocar reports.
The fastest lap ever achieved at Germany’s most famous circuit is a 6 min 11.1 sec lap, set by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 at the 1983 Nurburgring 1000km. The current road car record is held by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS at 6 min 47 sec.
When you look at the spec sheet of the Project One, it certainly appears to have an edge over any other road car to tackle the circuit. Whereas the GT2 RS has just under 700 hp, the F1-powered Project One delivers between 1000 hp and 1100 hp. What’s more, it has roughly 675 kg of downforce, significantly more than the 911.
Moers refused to comment further on what the Project One has up its sleeve, but the automaker has studied past lap records at the Nurburgring in detail. According to Moers, the most challenging part will be finding a driver capable of extracting the vehicle’s performance.
The Project One boasts an F1-derived engine and a robotized manual eight-speed transmission developed by Xtrac.
