Barrett-Jackson is no stranger to low-mileage vehicles, but they don’t often come with fewer than this 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Having spent most of its life apparently immobile in Michigan, it is now being sold at auction with just 37 miles (60 km) on the odometer.
According to the seller, this vehicle was sold new at Caldwell-Knap in Jackson, Michigan, which is about 78 miles from Detroit, or, a greater distance from Motor City than this Pontiac has driven in its life.
It almost seems like a shame that this car was never driven, because it was fairly well-equipped. Power comes from an L80 403 cubic inch (6.6-liter) Buick V8 that was rated at 185 hp (138 kW/188 PS) from the factory, which is almost laughable by today’s standards, given how large it is.

Inside, though, occupants would have been cosseted in the lap of luxury, with air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, cruise control, and power locks. The attention-grabbing Carmine red interior, meanwhile, apparently still has that new car smell.
This Firebird Trans Am also comes with a limited-slip differential at the back, an automatic transmission in the middle, a screaming chicken hood decal at the front, and 15×7-inch snowflake wheels underneath that are still wrapped in the original factory rubber.
Just what led this car to be sitting without being driven essentially for 44 years is not clear, but, I suppose, the original owner’s loss is your gain because this Firebird Trans Am is now going up for sale at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction, which is running until Sunday, January 29.
Prices for these cars are going up, and examples in “Good condition” tend to sell for around $28,000, according to Hagerty. The uniqueness and newness of this example, though, make it hard to predict how much more this one will go for, but six-figure numbers are not unheard of.
