Flyers distributed to dealers ahead of the official reveal of the mildly updated Mazda2 have surfaced in Japan showing new exterior details, new paint colors, new trim levels, and more.

Perhaps the most notable change over the current Mazda2 is the front grille section, as it now appears to be more prominent and the lower section appears to be given an X shape.

Mazda is also adding two new colors in the options, with Airstream Blue Metallic and Aero Gray Metallic, the latter of which can be seen in the photo below, per Japan’s creative311.com. The updated Mazda2 will also gain two new trim levels according to the brochure, a Sport or Sport+, adding a sporty black grille with a red “Sport” badge. It also gets 16-inch aluminum wheels, black seats with red accents, and a black roof.

Base models will attempt to do away with the majority of the front grille. The newly added BD and Sunlit trims will replace most of the mesh with solid, body-color panels that evoke the aesthetics of electrified models.

Don’t let that fool you though, as Mazda’s city car will only be powered by internal combustion engines. The flyer shows that the model will be offered with one of two engine options. The 15 BD and 15 Sport will be powered by a 1.5-liter engine four-cylinder gas engine. The XD BD and XD Sport+, meanwhile, will be powered by a 1.5-liter diesel engine.

It’s unclear if the engines will be modified at all with this refresh, but the 1.5-liter gas engine currently makes either 74 hp (55 kW/75 PS) or 89 hp (66 kW/90 PS) depending on trim, and the diesel engine produces 104 hp (77 kW/105 PS).

According to the leaked flyer, the name BD stands for “Blank Deck,” and refers to a clean slate for owners to work with. It gets two-tone hubcaps for the wheels, and the interior features a decorative air conditioner louver bezel, instrument panel, and shift bezel.

The Sunlit Citrus trim, meanwhile, is the luxury trim. It gets a genuine leather steering wheel and shift knob, as well as “Grand Luxe” power seats that are finished in greige with citrus accents.

Full details on the new model, as well as a wider variety of images, will be made available when the 2023 Mazda2 debuts, on January 27.
