There are vehicles that excel at off-roading; the Jeep Wrangler, for example, is one of the few vehicles in the world that is built from the get-go to traverse rough terrain. The McLaren 720S, on the other hand, is a supercar that most definitely is not meant to go off road.
So what happens when a 720S attempts to leave the beaten path as if it were a Wrangler? Surprisingly, it’s not as bad as you think.
The short clip below by Floris Dullaart shows a 720S traveling over some pretty rough terrain. One would have thought that the McLaren would get stuck instantly or get damaged, but surprisingly it doesn’t.
Instead, the 720S just soldiers on, traveling over a pretty big rut with some coaching from outside. The video ends abruptly when the 720S gets to uneven terrain with an incline. We suspect that this was as far as it could go before coming to a halt.
Still, we have to say that we’re impressed with the 720S’ effort. This is one of the few instances when you’ll see a supercar off-roading and it clearly can handle itself. The supercar’s increased spring rates and Proactive Chassis Control II suspension appears to be making the situation a lot better.
Is this owner crazy for pulling such a stunt in a McLaren? Well, it’s his car so he can do whatever he pleases with it; if it were ours, we’d enjoy it strictly on a surface that’s been around since 1902: tarmac.
