Ford Performance today shared an image of a motorsport wing surrounded by a big cloud of tire smoke. The cryptic post, it is anticipated, was made to preview the launch of its upcoming racecar, the Mustang GT3.
Built to race under new IMSA regulations, the Mustang GT3 will make its competition debut at next year’s Daytona 24-hour race, where it will take on the likes of the newly unveiled Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.
To ensure that it goes into competition armed with all the power it will need, Ford is expected to furnish the car with a 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 based on the Coyote engine that powers the roadgoing Mustang.

The racecar will be built, meanwhile, in Mooresville, Carolina, by Multimatic. The same outfit behind the Ford GT program that helped shepherd the automaker to class victories at Le Mans, its engineers will work to make carbon fiber body panels for the Mustang, give it a GT3 aero package, and more.
“Multimatic Motorsports is the perfect partner on this project for us,” said Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance’s Global Director last year. “Not only have they worked with us to develop numerous customer Mustang programs in the past, but its work on the Ford GT program and the new Bronco DR customer race programs has shown together we can provide championship-level race programs for Ford and its customers.”
One of six racecars being based on the all-new 2024 Mustang, Ford is getting serious about the car’s performance in the coming years. In addition to GT3 racing, Ford is also preparing versions for GT4 racing, the Australian Supercars championship, NASCAR, NHRA Factory X, and amateur racing, too.
The GT3 model, meanwhile, will be unveiled next month, at the Super Sebring IMSA/WEC weekend. It will make its competition debut with a two-car factory effort in IMSA’s GTD Pro class at the Daytona 24 in January 2024.
