Maybach revealed its first plug-in hybrid model, in the form of the S580e sedan, while announcing that its first EV will debut this year. Predictably, the PHEV is a more luxurious variant of the standard Mercedes-Benz S580e, sharing the same electrified setup and allowing a zero-emission range for the first time in a Maybach.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 362 hp (270 kW / 367 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, with a single electric motor contributing 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. As with the less financially privileged Mercedes twin, the combined output is 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), allowing a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
More importantly, the 28 kWh battery pack offers a purely electric range of up to 100 km (62 miles) between charges, measured under the WLTP cycle. In EV mode, top speed is limited to 140 km/h (87 mph). A full charge can be completed in as low as 30 minutes from the optionally available 60 kW DC charging, although it certainly takes longer from the standard 11 kW AC unit.

The S580e is the fourth variant of the Maybach-branded S-Class, after the widely available V8-powered S580 and V12-powered S680, plus the China-specific entry-level six-cylinder S480. From the exterior, the only way to tell the PHEV apart from the others is the lettering on the tailgate, the discreet blue accents in the headlights, and the charging port on the rear fenders which looks identical to the fuel-cap door on the other side. The same applies to the interior, where luxury prevails, although everyone will know it is a PHEV from the complete silence of the EV mode. The driver also has access to the battery charging rate from the digital instrument cluster.
Notably, Maybach used the exact same renderings for the S580e that were published in the launch of the S480 two years ago, although they changed the alloy wheels and added the small PHEV-specific styling cues. First Ever Maybach EV Coming This Year
The market launch of the Mercedes-Maybach S580e will start in China, followed by Thailand, Europe, and other markets in the future. During the official announcement, Mercedes-Maybach boss Daniel Lescow was the one to confirm that the first fully electric Maybach will follow in 2023. If you are wondering about that, it will most likely be based on the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV as proven by our spy shots.
