Which BMW X4 Tickles Your Fancy: The Original Or The New One?

The second-generation BMW X4 arrives more than a decade after the automaker first pioneered the SUV Coupe segment with the original X6 crossover.

Unveiled earlier this year, ahead of its public debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the all-new BMW X4 boasts a larger body, longer wheelbase, lower center of gravity and about 110 lbs (49.8 kg) less than before. Not only that, but it also looks different than before, in pretty much all aspects except for overall form factor.

As you can see in this video put together by BMW themselves, the new X4 has beefier headlights with adaptive LED tech and modern graphics, plus a considerably larger front grille.

The profile, while similar to that of the old car, features a flatter roofline and more muscular fenders, whereas the rear comes with a wider window, sharper taillights, different tailpipes and a bumper-mounted license plate holder.

Thanks to both the winder rear window as well as the new taillights with their three dimensional surface design, the all-new model looks wider and more planted, something BMW meant to achieve all along while shifting from one design language to the next.

Still, one could argue that the new X4’s rear end does sort of resemble the Mercedes GLC Coupe’s a bit too much, but that’s only because Mercedes were first to bring a long and sharp taillight design to this segment.

As for the interior, the newer car offers a higher seating position, a lower instrument panel, more overall room, a 75%-larger head-up display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, voice and gesture control and improved active safety features.
