Though they’re mostly there to enhance a vehicle’s styling, rear spoilers are supposed to keep a car stuck firmly to the road. But what about keeping the spoiler stuck to the vehicle? That’s turned out to be an issue for some models of Durango SUV, forcing Dodge to issue a recall.
Dodge has discovered that the rear spoiler on certain 2021-23 Durangos may not be aligned correctly with the vehicle’s roof, which could lead to the spoiler becoming damaged when the rear liftgate is opened and closed. In a worst case scenario the spoiler could come detached, which would really spoil someone’s day if they were following a Durango when it decided to jettison its wing.
A total of 139,019 Durangos built between October 2020 and February 2023 are potentially affected and are being recalled to dealers. Owners will be contacted starting April 14 and asked to schedule a visit to their local service department to have the spoiler checked.

Dodge says that the issue is related to an assembly problem, rather than a faulty part, and isn’t currently aware of any accidents or injuries that have resulted from the spoiler making a break for freedom. But the risk of the wing detaching is a real one. Dodge has identified eight customer assistance records, 56 warranty claims and one field report relating to the issue. It suggests that before the spoiler actually breaks off Durango owners might hear it hitting the body when opening the liftgate or pick up a rattling sound while driving.
