Genesis could launch a small electric vehicle with a focus on the European market as part of an important expansion of the company’s line-up.

The South Korean brand is one of the most promising new entrants into the luxury vehicle segment and has already proven it can build a superb EV with the GV60. Speaking with Autocar, the company’s head of product planning, Mark Choi, said that a new small EV could be particularly important for the European market.

“We’re looking at expanding our model line-up, and especially in Europe a smaller model is being considered,” he said. However, Choi noted that a lot of factors need to be considered before such a vehicle can receive the green light.

“It’s not a simple case of adding new models; we need to factor in the growth of sales anticipated for our current cars, weigh that against our manufacturing capacity and then consider the rising cost of raw materials and understand how that affects the decision.”

Such a model would slot below the GV60 in the brand’s range and could take inspiration from the Mint Concept unveiled back in 2019. Genesis design boss SangYup Lee noted that it could spawn a very compelling small luxury car.

“The Mint concept is still being studied,” he acknowledged. “We want to understand what a small luxury car could be. When you live in a city, you don’t necessarily want a big car, so a small luxury vehicle is something to think about. There are premium small cars, but a luxury small car could be something new.”
