Toyota sales jumped significantly through the month of February, despite the Japanese car manufacturer experiencing a slowing of sales in January.
Figures released by Toyota reveal that it sold 773,271 vehicles worldwide in February. This was a 10.3% increase from February 2022 and also significantly higher than the 709,870 vehicles that it sold in January 2023. Both Japanese and worldwide sales rose significantly.
Indeed, Toyota sold 155,840 vehicles in Japan throughout February, a 53.2% increase from the previous year and a noticeable increase from the 130,218 units it sold in January. Sales outside of Japan hit 617,431, a 3% increase and also higher than the 579,652 units it sold outside of Japan in January.

A key reason behind the jump in sales is that Toyota was able to increase production year-on-year because of an easing of semiconductor shortages and the spread of COVID-19 it and its suppliers experienced in 2022.
“The situation remains difficult to predict due to semiconductor shortages and COVID-19,” Toyota noted. “However, we will continue to carefully monitor the parts supply situation and minimize sudden decreases in production as much as possible while making every effort to deliver as many vehicles as possible to our customers at the earliest date.”
As mentioned, Toyota’s production numbers also climbed last month. It built a total of 755,839 vehicles worldwide, an 2.0% increase over February 2022, of which 281,521 units were built in Japan and 474,318 were manufactured outside of Japan. This means Japanese production jumped by 11.2% while production outside of Japan fell 2.7% year-over-year.
When accounting for the Daihatsu and Hino brands, Toyota produced a total of 896,712 vehicles in February and sold 856,376 vehicles.
