Rugged trucks and SUVs are a hit with consumers, so Volkswagen has unveiled the 2024 Atlas Peak Edition at the New York Auto Show.

The off-road focused trim draws inspiration from the Atlas Basecamp concept and is one of the few instances where the production model looks better than the original. The front end makes its intentions clear as the Peak Edition has a gloss black bumper and contrasting silver accents. The dark theme is echoed on the partially blacked out grille, which also sports an illuminated Volkswagen logo.

Continuing further back, we can see plastic body cladding and matte silver accents. They’re joined by Peak Edition badging and black 18-inch wheels that are wrapped in meaty all-terrain tires. Buyers will also find black mirror caps, black window surrounds, and black roof rails.

The rear echoes the front with a blacked out bumper and matte silver trim. Designers also added chrome exhaust tips and a black strip beneath the taillights. The model also offers two exclusive colors known as Avocado Green and Pure Grey.

While the Atlas Peak Edition was designed to tackle the great outdoors, you’ll want to stay inside the nicely equipped cabin that features Titan Black leatherette seats with light grey accents and orange contrast stitching. Other highlights include black metallic trim and a 30 color ambient lighting system. Speaking of lights, buyers will find an illuminated “Peak Edition” badge on the dashboard.

We’ll learn more about the Peak Edition this summer, but the 2024 Atlas received a significant facelift and now comes standard with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a freestanding 12-inch infotainment system.

Power is provided by a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which develops 269 hp (201 kW / 273 PS) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. That’s nearly as powerful as the old 3.6-liter VR6 and Volkswagen has promised the engine will deliver improved fuel efficiency.
