A supplier with close ties to Tesla says that the automaker is planning to build at least 4 million entry-level cars yearly by 2030. The figures fall in line with other estimates that Tesla has made in the past. Production is reportedly going to take place among multiple facilities including those in China and Mexico.

The Model 2 or what CEO Elon Musk has referred to as the $25,000 or small EV has long been the source of conjecture and rumor. In March of this year, Musk said that there was a clear path to making such a vehicle and claimed that it would be “roughly half the production cost of our Model 3.”

The Model 3 itself is one of the most popular electric vehicles in the world so an even more affordable Tesla could gather even more market share. According to a Chinese outlet, 36 Krypton, sources say that Tesla is planning an annual production capacity of 4 million units.

Tesla Plans To Build 4 Million Affordable Entry-Level EVs A Year By 2030, Claims Report

That would be a huge number for the automaker who last year delivered 1.3 million vehicles in total across all its lineup. Still, it’s said that it wants to produce 20 million cars annually by 2030. That in and of itself is an incredibly ambitious goal as it’s about double what Toyota, the world’s current production leader, managed in 2022.

For the time being, Tesla has a capacity in the neighborhood of 2 million vehicles annually but new factories like the one slated for Mexico will boost that figure. In addition, should the Cybertruck actually go into mass production as Musk claimed, it would further serve to meet the company’s claims.

As with any other proclamation from insider sources surrounding Tesla, it’s important to take this report with a grain of salt. Since Tesla doesn’t have a PR team we’re left waiting to see if this report proves true.
