General Motors has overtaken Ford as the second best-selling maker of EVs in the U.S. and it’s done so by a considerable margin.

Sales figures recently released by Ford reveal that it sold 10,866 electric vehicles in the U.S. throughout the first quarter. This represents a 41% increase from the same period last year. However, that was not enough for it to keep second place behind Tesla as GM managed to sell 20,670 EVs over the same period.

The General says it is on track to build 50,000 EVs in North America through June and that it will double this figure in the second half of the year. It expects some 70,000 of the EVs it will build this year to be the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV. All told, GM enjoyed a strong start to 2023, reporting total sales increases of 18% across all its brands, selling a total of 603,208 vehicles in the first three months of the year, growing its market share by 1.5%.

GM Sold Double The Amount Of EVs That Ford Did Last Quarter

“GM is off to a great start in 2023,” GM executive vice president Steve Carlisle said. “We gained significant market share in the first quarter, pricing was strong, inventories are in very good shape, and we sold more than 20,000 EVs in a quarter for the first time. We’re leading in the fleet and commercial market, and all our brands have a lot of momentum heading into a busy season of new product launches.”

The Ford Mustang Mach-E didn’t enjoy such a strong start to 2023, however. Indeed, sales fell by 19.7% to 5,407 units after production at the factory where it is built in Mexico was halted. The carmaker also lost five weeks of production for the F-150 Lightning after a fire prompted it to issue a recall. A total of 4,291 examples of the F-150 Lightning were sold.
