The Hyundai Ioniq 6 was crowned as the top pick in three categories at the 2023 World Car of the Year Awards, and is 2023’s best vehicle. That makes this the second year in a row that the brand has been a triple-winner at the awards.
The new electric sedan was named the World Electric Vehicle of the year, its design was singled out as the best of the 2023, and it was named the overall car of the year at the New York Auto Show today. Hyundai’s sister brand, Kia, also earned an accolade, as the EV6 GT was dubbed the World Performance Car of the year.
The only categories in which a Hyundai Motor Corporation vehicle wasn’t named the best on earth were the World Luxury Car and World Urban Car. Those were won by the Lucid Air and the Citroën C3, respectively.

“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious honor two years in a row, which recognizes the tremendous talents and unrelenting efforts of everyone at Hyundai Motor Company to bring EVs like Ioniq 6 to market,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “This honor reinforces our commitment to be a global leader in vehicle electrification and will serve to embolden our efforts as a smart mobility solutions provider.”
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 starts at $41,600 in the U.S., and comes standard with a suite of impressive technology, such as twin 12.3-inch screens. In its longest-range trim, the Ioniq 6 can go up to 361 miles (581 km) per charge, while it can churn out up to 320 hp (239 kW / 324 PS) in its highest-power, twin-motor specification.
Meanwhile, the Kia EV6 GT is based on the same platform, but it can deliver up to 576 hp (429 kW/583 PS) and 545 lb-ft (738 Nm) of torque. That allows it to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.4 seconds, all while giving drivers up to 206 miles (331 km) of range.
The Lucid Air, another electric vehicle, is produced in the U.S. and delivers impressive power and range figures at a higher price. In its highest-performance guise, it delivers more than 1,200 hp (895 kW/1,217 PS) and can reach 60 mph in less than two seconds, all while delivering a luxury experience inside.
Although the Citroën C3 is much slower and less tech-focused than the above vehicles, it is also much smaller and cheaper. Intended primarily for the South American and Indian markets, it delivers plenty of practicality and style at a sensible price.
The winners of the 2023 World Car of the Year awards were selected by a jury of 100 distinguished automotive journalists from 32 countries across the globe. The trophies presented to this year’s winners were designed Ian Callum’s design company.
