Volkswagen used the New York Auto Show to introduce the 2024 Atlas Peak Edition and there could be more rugged crossovers on the horizon.

Speaking at a preview event ahead of the show, officials told us additional models could eventually receive the Peak Edition treatment. However, nothing has been decided as Volkswagen is waiting to see how customers respond to the rugged Atlas.

Officials went on to describe the three-row crossover as a good starting point to explore off-road variants. As a result, if it turns out to be a hit, we could potentially see a Tiguan or Taos Peak Edition in the future.

While rugged crossovers have been growing in popularity, the Atlas Peak Edition is rather tame as the only off-road upgrade is the addition of all-terrain tires. Volkswagen considered more extreme changes, but decided to go with something that offered “outdoorsy style” as well as a comfortable and quiet ride. That’s likely a smart move as the Atlas is better known for tackling suburbia than the Rubicon Trail.

Officials went on to describe the model as an R-Line variant for off-road enthusiasts and that’s a fitting analogy as the Atlas Peak Edition is mainly focused on styling. In particular, the model is distinguished by a unique front bumper with silver accents and a gloss black “X” pattern. They’re joined by plastic body cladding, blacked out trim, and a modified rear end. Buyers will also find a handful of interior upgrades including an illuminated “Peak Edition” badge on the dashboard.

While Volkswagen initially billed the Peak Edition as a trim, it’s really more of a package that will be offered on two versions of the Atlas. Officials didn’t go into many specifics but, judging by the pictures, one will apparently be based on the Atlas SEL. The company also revealed the Peak Edition will be offered exclusively with all-wheel drive.
