Not long after Maserati showcased the MC20 GT2 racing car in full, the car manufacturer continues to test the car and recently brought a colorful prototype to the Monza Circuit in Italy.

Maserati is putting the final touches on the MC20 GT2 prior to its making its competitive debut at the 24 Hours of Spa in June. The racer uses many of the same features as the road car but has also made a series of modifications to significantly boost its performance and make it an absolute weapon on the track.

The first thing to note about the MC20 GT2 is that it features the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 as the street car. While we don’t yet know how much power this engine delivers in the race car, the road-going model has 621 hp and 538 lb-ft (729 Nm) of torque. These figures may rise for the race car but it will have to comply with Balance of Performance rules.

This clip of the car testing in Italy provides us with an excellent opportunity to hear this engine in all its glory. It sounds like an absolute beast of a thing and the six-speed sequential transmission that it is mated to rattles off shifts with lightning speed.

Of course, there is much more to the MC20 GT2 than a tuned engine and a new gearbox. For example, the carmaker has overhauled the bodywork to significantly increase downforce while also keeping weight down. Key changes made include the fitment of a new front fascia with a more prominent splitter, a distinctive hood with large air extractors, louvers on the front wheel arches, a roof scoop, unique side air intakes, and a towering rear wing.

The Maserati MC20 GT2 will race in the Fanatec GT2 European Series Championship and is the brand’s first GT race car since the MC12 competed between 2004 and 2010.
