A photo of a Tesla Model 3 with a redesigned face appeared online, making us believe it could be showing the “Project Highland” update that is set to debut later this year.

The single shot was taken in an unknown warehouse location and went viral on Reddit where users shared their thoughts about the new design. Many wondered if this is a legit scoop or an independent tuning project, but the extent of the modifications suggests the former.

The pictured Tesla Model 3 has a new face, with the revised LED headlights bringing it closer to the larger Model S / X in terms of exterior design. The bumper looks cleaner thanks to the straight character lines and the slightly smaller intake, while the front fenders and bonnet have also been redesigned. The modifications are in line with previous spy shots of camouflaged prototypes, although changes are more extensive than originally expected.

While the interior is hardly visible from the windshield and appears to be covered, the bump in front of the steering wheel could hide a new setup for the digital cockpit. Besides looking different and bringing a few technology updates, the upcoming Model 3 will be cheaper to produce by reducing the number of body panels and components. This will allow the automaker to be more profitable, as it now has to compete with more rivals from China and Europe in this segment.

According to the latest reports, production of the 2024 Tesla Model 3 will start in September 2023 in the Shanghai and California factories. Tesla is also working on a similar update for the Model Y, which is set to enter production in October 2024.
