If you felt the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV was a little over the top, perhaps you’ll be more interested in a restrained Swede known as the Volvo EX90 Excellence.
Unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show, the EX90 Excellence will sit at the top of the range and take the “premium experience to the next level.” While the biggest changes occur inside, the flagship stands out thanks to a two-tone paint job and unique 22-inch wheels that feature an eye-catching design.
Of course, the exterior plays second fiddle as the EX90 Excellence is all about the rear passenger compartment. In particular, Volvo described the crossover as the “perfect companion if you prefer to relax in the rear seats rather than drive yourself.”

So what does this perfect companion have? Two individual rear seats, which replace the traditional second and third rows. The seats are separated by an elegant center console, which has a wooden upper panel that opens to reveal a refrigerator.
There’s another wooden section below, which has an integrated touch panel that provides easy access to the heating and massage settings for the seats. Passengers will also find a large Orrefors crystal that acts as a switch to control the fragrance dispenser. The latter emits three different scents and the “sensory experience is amplified by corresponding mood lighting.”
Customers can choose between wool or Nordico upholstery. While the wool looks great, Volvo noted Nordico upholstery is eco-friendly as it’s “created from textiles made from recycled material such as PET bottles and bio-attributed material from forests in Sweden and Finland.”
Rounding out the highlights are dedicated climate controls and soft pillows that help to cradle your neck. We can also see a drawer and a 14.5-inch infotainment system for front seat occupants.
Volvo didn’t release too many other details, but confirmed the crossover has a dual-motor all-wheel drive system and a range of up to 404 miles (650 km) in the CLTC cycle. The company went on to say the EX90 Excellence is the “safest four-seater we’ve ever built” as it has an “invisible shield of safety enabled by our latest sensing technology.”
The EX90 Excellence will be launched in China and meet the need for “high-end, chauffeur-driven cars.” It sounds like the model will eventually be offered in other markets, although there’s no timetable at this point.
