It’s shaping up to be battery plant week as SK On and the Hyundai Motor Group have joined forces to announce an all-new facility for Bartow County, Georgia.

The companies will invest approximately $5 (£4 / €4.5) billion into the plant as part of a 50/50 joint venture. The firms didn’t go into many specifics, but Bartow County is located approximately 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Atlanta and is ideally situated as it’s close to plants in Montgomery, Alabama and West Point, Georgia. It’s also near the all-new plant in Bryan County, which will “produce a diverse range of innovative Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia electric vehicles” starting in the first half of 2025.

As for the battery plant itself, Hyundai said it aims to begin producing battery cells in the second half of 2025. When production ramps up, the facility will be able to produce up to 35 GWh of battery cells annually. That’s enough to power 300,000 electric vehicles.

Hyundai Mobis will be tasked with assembling battery packs using cells from the plant. Once they’re completed, the finished packs will be sent to other U.S. manufacturing facilities for use in Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles.

This is big news for a number of reasons and the Hyundai Motor Group noted it further accelerates their “electrification efforts and bolsters its position as an EV leader in the U.S. market with a stable battery supply to support the production of highly competitive EV models.”
