The current BMW M5 remains one of the most impressive super sedans on the market but BMW is well into development of the next-generation model, which is currently stretching its legs at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
This particular 2024 M5 test car has slightly less camouflage than we’ve seen adorning some others in recent months, providing us with a reasonably good look at the revised exterior design. The front end stands out thanks to the reshaped headlights as well as the new lower grille. BMW’s designers have also altered the shape of the air intakes found up front.
It’s a little harder to determine the changes made to the rear fascia of the M5 but you will no doubt notice a set of revised taillights with new LED graphics. The shape of the bumper is also quite different than the current model.
BMW will also make a series of changes to the cabin of the 2024 M5, taking cues from the company’s latest models, including the 7-Series. Being a proper M car, expect to see heavy-bolstered front seats, striking upholstery options, and a model-specific steering wheel.

For as promising as the new looks of the 2024 M5 are shaping up to be, we’re most excited about what is going on under the skin. All indications point towards the M5 rocking the same basic hybrid setup as the BMW XM, meaning there will be a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 working alongside an electric motor. This powertrain is good for 738 hp and 735 lb-ft (997 Nm) in the flagship XM Label Red but the new M5 may deliver even more, offering closer to 800 hp. If that’s the case then it should have enough power to rival the insane Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance with its 831 hp and 1,023 lb-ft (1,400 Nm) of torque.
