When life gave one Chevrolet customer lemons, he just turned them into a Corvette Z06. Well, to be clear, he turned a Stingray that ended up being a lemon into a brand new Z06 through Chevy’s buyback program. The process was lengthy but it sounds like a clear win for those that might face a similar situation.
According to Robert Drummond, his C8 Stingray had multiple issues and he posted about those online. As of late last year, his hard-top convertible still wasn’t working. So he requested a vehicle buyback via a written complaint and sent it off to General Motors.
In the process, he learned that GM will allow individuals in his situation to have a lemon replaced with any other current GM product. So Drummond ordered a 3LZ Corvette Z06 in November. By December it was confirmed and on May 2nd, it arrived at the dealership.

The sweetest part of the deal seems to be the way GM handles the money end of the transaction. Not only does it pay for the tax, title, and licensing fees, but it also only requires the buyer to pay the difference in MSRP. The dealer doesn’t get a chance to get greedy with a markup since the deal goes down between the customer and the automaker itself.
Drummond isn’t alone in this finding. He credits another page, Vette Titans, as the inspiration for his decision to ask for the upgrade. Another customer in the comment section said he had a similar experience. After Chevy was unable to fix a transmission issue with his Corvette, the automaker agreed to buy back the car and sell him a Z06 for the difference in MSRP.
For Drummond, the exchange took many months but now he’s got a brand new Z06 to show for it and he didn’t have to pay through the nose to get it. In a world full of stories involving less-than-optimal behavior from all sorts of parties in the automotive industry we’re happy to see one on the other end of the spectrum.
