A British company by the name of Electrogenic has just unveiled a special ‘plug and play’ electric conversion kit for the classic Mini, turning the tiny hatchback into an EV with plenty of appeal. The kit isn’t cheap, however.
The kit consists of a new electric powertrain mounted to a new subframe that replaces the original front subframe of any classic Mini. This EV package consists of an electric motor with 60 hp and 99 lb-ft (135 Nm) of torque as well as a compact 20 kW battery pack. Electrogenic notes that the motor and battery are all wired into the new front subframe while a Euro Type 2 charge port comes pre-mounted and can be accessed through the replacement front grille.
Given that the kit only includes a 20 kWh battery pack, it comes as little surprise that the range is limited to just 80 miles (129 km). An extended range option is in the works and will see an additional battery pack integrated into the boot.

Electrogenic says that the kit is very easy to install. In fact, all a classic Mini owner needs to do is remove the original engine and subframe before bolting in the new subframe assembly and wiring up the throttle and dashboard. The kit is also fully reversible, something that’s particularly important should an owner ever decide that they prefer a combustion engine powering their Mini.
“We’ve converted a number of beautiful Minis over the years to electric drive, and have seen significant demand for a solution that’s both easy to fit and budget-friendly,” Electrogenic co-founder Steve Drummond said. “Our new drop-in kit meets those requirements perfectly; it’s cost-effective and simple to install, yet still delivers superb electric performance, thanks to our latest-generation EV powertrain tech.”
What about the cost? Well, the company says it is targeting a price of £15,000 ($nearly $19,000 at current exchange rates) which, as you’ll probably agree, is quite a substantial sum. Indeed, some very good examples of the classic Mini can be found in the UK for less than £15,000.
