Our spy photographers caught the first lightly camouflaged prototype of the electric ID.7 wagon testing out in the open and getting ready for its rumored 2024 debut, giving us a better look at the production version of the 2019 ID. Space Vizzion Concept.

In typical VW style, the camouflage of the fully electric prototype resembles an ICE-powered vehicle. The fake grille and bumper intakes are trying to trick people into believing it is just a Passat Variant, as with the outline of exhaust pipes at the back. However, it is clear from the proportions and the fully uncovered side view that the model is based on the VW ID.7 sedan, albeit with a five-door estate bodystyle.

The headlights and taillights are also covered in stickers, hiding the full-width LED units of the model. As with the ID.7 sedan, the production version of the wagon will be toned down compared to the concept, while retaining some basic features. The entire front section up to the B-pillars could be shared with the ID.7, as with the dashboard layout including the 15-inch infotainment touchscreen and the fancy smart air vents for the climate system.

While the regular ID.7 is already a liftback since the tailgate opens with the rear glass, the redesigned roofline and taller rear section will most likely result in a larger cargo space. The rear passengers could also benefit from a slightly increased headroom, bringing it closer to SUVs in terms of practicality. Still, the overall footprint appears roughly the same as the 195.3 inches (4,961 mm) long ID.7 sedan, at least judging from the spy shots.

The wagon will sit on the upgraded MEB architecture, sharing the powertrain and battery options with its sibling. The latter is available with a 77 kWh (82 kWh gross) or an 86 kWh (91 kWh gross) battery pack, offering a WLTP range of 382 miles (615 km) and 435 miles (700 km) respectively. Range figures should be slightly different in the wagon due to the altered aerodynamics. As for the powertrain, the rear-mounted motor will produce 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque, with a dual-motor AWD variant following in the future.

The upcoming model will be the first estate/wagon in the ID range, so we don’t know the name it will use. Chances are that VW will opt for a new naming strategy for its electric wagons, rather than the traditional “Variant” moniker used in the ICE-powered range including the wagon-only Passat. We expect to learn more about the VW ID.7 wagon as we move closer to its official debut which is expected sometime next year.
