American cars aren’t necessarily well-known for any particular performance metric aside from straight-line speed. Despite that, there’s another important factor that’s often overlooked: reliability. Today, we’re asking you to tell us what the most reliable American car ever is.

We’ve got a few suggestions for you to consider starting with our lead image. The XJ generation of the Jeep Cherokee is well-known for its robust chassis, classic boxy styling, and nearly unkillable drivetrain. Truly though, just about any Jeep with the brand’s 4.0-liter inline-six engine is highly regarded as a reliable vehicle. Having owned one, I can speak from experience when I say that it’ll handle more punishment than is reasonable.

There’s a decent chance that the correct answer should go to a truck of some sort. These heavy-duty vehicles are often built with the intention of being used harshly in extreme conditions with extended maintenance periods. The Ford F-Series, the Dodge RAM, or the Chevrolet Silverado could be easy choices here.

Frankly, it seems like the obvious choice might be a bit too easy. The Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquis probably takes the cake here and it’s not just because some police departments are still using them for everyday duty.

It’s because those departments and the other organizations that use or used this car as a fleet vehicle tend to abuse it. Despite that, the Crown Victoria and its Mercury sibling are known nationwide for their reliability.
