The news keeps getting worse for Lucid, as photos of an Air with significant fire damage have emerged online. In this case, early indications suggest that it wasn’t a high-voltage battery fire, but the destruction to the front of the car is still a bad look.
Fortunately, according to Reddit user u/protectivedetective, who originally posted the photos, no one was injured in the incident, and the Air was the only thing to suffer any damage. The cause of the fire is still being determined.
“We have begun a full technical investigation of the incident that occurred on Saturday, June 10, in Longwood, Florida,” Lucid said in a statement to Carscoops. “This work is still ongoing, but our findings thus far indicate that the fire did not involve the high-voltage battery pack.”

Looking at the damage, which appears to be focused around the front left quarter of the car, there’s little to suggest that the larger battery that powers the car was involved in this fire. In those cases, vehicles tend to be completely destroyed by the blaze and usually require a more thorough response from firefighters.
The model that caught fire was reportedly a base Air Pure model that was parked a few rows back from other vehicles that were in the lot for a “semi-private demo” of the different models in the Air lineup.
“While I was enjoying the Grand Touring Model right before test driving, the base model which was parked a few lanes back actually started smoking while stationary,” they wrote. “The smoke evolved into Flames, and the vehicle started getting crispy.”
Although u/protectivedetective described the event as “a complete spontaneous fire,” they wrote that there was an odor, “almost like burning brakes,” around the time of the incident.
The fire is more bad news for Lucid, which is dealing with slow sales. Although the Air is among the fastest, longest-range, and quickest-charging EVs on the market, it is also among the most expensive. Lucid has been trying to apply discounts and run events like these to drum up business, but this is exactly the kind of incident the company could do without.
