Mercedes-Benz has issued two major recalls in the United States, both regarding an issue with the fuel pump that could cause vehicles to shut off.
The first of the two recalls impacts 143,551 passenger models while the second encompasses 20,500 examples of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Metris. In both, the recall notices state that affected vehicles have a fuel pump impeller that might not meet specifications “in regards to material characteristics.”
The fault could cause the impeller to deform and if it comes into contact with the fuel pump housing, it could lead to mechanical resistance. This could trigger a shutdown of the fuel pump, prompting the vehicle to lose propulsion and increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Mercedes-Benz says the issue has been traced back to a deviation in the production process of a sub-supplier.
Owners of impacted vehicles may be alerted to the issue through a warning message displayed in the instrument cluster. They may also notice the engine running rough.
