We really like the current Land Rover Defender but for those who own an older Defender and are looking to update it, is buying a new one the best move, or is it worth getting the original restored? After taking a peek at the latest creation from Defender restorer and restomod builder Himalaya 4×4, we’re inclined to say the latter.
The company’s latest project started out as a regular Defender 130 truck and is now rocking a new Cummins 2.8 turbo diesel engine that is said to produce much more power than the original unit, although Himalaya 4×4 hasn’t released horsepower and torque outputs. It has also installed custom four-link coilover suspension, Brembo brakes, and Dynatrac axles at the front and rear to completely transform how the truck handles.

No serious suspension upgrades would be complete without the fitment of limited-slip differentials at both the front and rear so Himalaya 4×4 has fitted both. It has also installed 18-inch Black Rhino wheels with BF Goodrich tires. Now that the off-roader is equipped to handle even the most challenging of terrain, a set of rock sliders have been built with power folding side steps to protect the Land Rover’s precious undercarriage.
The exterior changes continue with the fitment of custom fender flares both at the front and rear. A new front bumper with a winch also catches the eye. The restomodder has then adorned the bodywork in a shade of sparkling silver while finishing the roof in black.
The cabin has benefited from a host of changes as well. For example, it is now wrapped in two-tone brown and white leather with cross-stitching. The Defender also rocks a new JL Audio system and a modern HVAC system. New gauges have also been fitted.
“Our new Himalaya 4×4 130 truck perfectly encapsulates the capabilities of our production team,” Himalaya 4×4 president Greg Shondel said. “We expertly constructed everything for a client who enjoys outdoor adventures, so they needed a truck capable of taking them anywhere. We incorporated the best of the best in terms of engine, suspension, braking, and handling to create the perfect summer rig.”
