Skip The Waiting List (And The 812) And Bid On This Ferrari F12 TdF

Want a new Ferrari? Good luck getting a spot on the waiting list. Especially for a V12 model. Your best chance, then, might be to buy one that’s already been made and sold before. Say, like this one right here.

It’s a 2017 Ferrari F12 TdF – one of only 799 made. It has just 1,157 miles (1,862 kilometers) on it, over $90,000 of options, and was even signed by Sebastian Vettel. And it’s coming up for auction at Mecum‘s sale in Indianapolis next month.

The more hardcore version of the F12 Berlinetta, the TdF packs a 6.3-liter V12. Naturally aspirated, it produces a massive 769 horsepower (780 ps/574 kW) and 520 lb-ft (705 Nm) of torque. That’s enough to send it rocketing to 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 2.9 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 211 mph (340 km/h).

Now at this point, you might be thinking that the F12 has since been replaced by the 812 Superfast. And you’d be right. In fact, with 789 hp (800 ps/588 kW) and 530 lb-ft (718 Nm) of torque, the 812’s is the most potent naturally aspirated engine on the market. More powerful, at any rate, than any version of the Lamborghini Aventador built to date – including the SuperVeloce with its 740 hp (750 ps/552 kW) and 509 lb-ft (690 Nm) of torque.

But we’ll tell you why we’d sooner take the F12 TdF over the 812 Superfast. For starters, there’s the waiting-list issue we mentioned above. But it’s not just a matter of availability.

The TdF is lighter. Significantly lighter, at 3,120 pounds (1,415 kg) dry, compared to the 3,362 lbs (1,525 kg) at which the Superfast tips the scales. So even with slightly less power, it boasts the same acceleration and top-speed figures. More telling, though, is that the TdF lapped Ferrari’s Fiorano test circuit a half-second faster than the Superfast. In fact, at 1:21 (compared to the 812’s 1:21.5), the F12 TdF is the fastest un-boosted road car ever to lap the circuit. Faster than the new turbocharged 488 Pista, and only 0.3 seconds off the pace set by LaFerrari.

And with fewer than 800 built, the F12 TdF is bound to hold its value better than the new 812 Superfast. Unfortunately that means that it’ll be more expensive to acquire now, too. In fact, if you miss out on this one, there are four examples of the same listed for sale on James Edition right now. One’s listed for €759,900 (about $ 935k), another for €795,000 ($980k), and two more with prices undisclosed. And we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see values continue to rise.
