Monterey Car Week is one of the few places on earth where you can get tired of seeing all of the cars that are normally the exclusive province of magazine covers. Given the density of insanely powerful and desirable vehicles, it’s not that surprising that the event also keeps local cops pretty busy.
On its social media channels, the Monterey Police Department posted statistics with its Car Week 2023 Traffic Enforcement Report for 3 of the 7 Monterey Car Week days, from August 17 to August 19.
Although that amounts to just a small portion of the week, those are likely to be three of the busiest days at the event. And on them, Monterey Police conducted a total of 211 traffic stops and issued a total of 135 traffic citations.

For both categories, Friday, August 18, was the busiest day, and the cops racked up 86 stops and 57 citations. However, despite being the busiest day, drivers were worse behaved on Thursday and Saturday.
The police department reports that it towed three vehicles each on the 17th and the 19th, compared to just two on the 18th. Meanwhile, it arrested two drivers on Friday, three drivers on Thursday, and five on Saturday.
In addition to these figures, the police department also reports the highest speed clocked in “the tunnel.” The Drive reports that this refers to a quarter-mile-long tunnel near Cannery Row, which attracts a lot of antics. With an officer normally parked at one end of the tunnel with a radar gun, it’s also a hot spot for stops and citations.
The fastest speed reported by the Monterey Police Department was 94 mph (151 km/h) on Thursday, in a tunnel that appears to have a posted speed limit of 35 mph (56 km/h). The highest recorded speed on Friday was 87 mph (140 km/h), whereas on Saturday, no high speed was published by the department.
Why the police department opted not to post the final day’s record is not clear, but it remains deeply irresponsible to triple the speed limit. Just because rich people are doing it (not people attending a sideshow) doesn’t make it cute.
