A diesel truck’s driver rolling coal on a pair of cyclists in North Carolina over the last weekend highlights the lack of respect some road users have for others. In the very brief video, a white truck seemingly trapped behind two cyclists pulls around them, leaving a thick black cloud in its wake. This incident serves as further evidence against modifications that enable rolling coal.

The act of rolling coal involves modifying a diesel truck to inject more fuel into the combustion chamber than it can efficiently burn. This excess fuel results in the production of the characteristic sooty black exhaust seen in the video below. Of course, it’s important to note that modifying an engine to operate in this manner can often be illegal and is widely frowned upon due to its negative environmental and health impacts.

The illegality is partially to do with safety. Public roads are an incredibly dangerous place and that’s true even when everyone is on their best manners. Add in a dash of doltish behavior and things can get a lot worse. Thankfully, in the video below, the result was likely little more than some smoke inhalation.

The truck in this case rolls coal on two cyclists as it passes them in the left lane. While the video description on Reddit claims that the “pickup got stuck behind two cyclists and decided to ‘get back’ at them”, we can’t be certain about the motivation here. Nevertheless, it’s a clear sign of disrespect for these vulnerable road users. The video sparked off a string of comments about rolling coal.

“If I could snap my fingers and they’d be gone I’d do it. Nothing of value lost,” said one comment. “Want to know why the EPA is cracking down the automotive aftermarket? That a****** right there,” read another. That last comment has, at the very least, a modicum of truth to it.

In August, the EPA handed out a $1 million fine to Gorilla Tuning of Rexburg, Idaho over emissions-defeating devices. That same month, it fined Sinister Diesel in California $1 million for the same thing.
