Last month, Ram officially presented the “Final Edition” of its overpowered 1500 TRX truck, and rumors have circulated about what will follow next. Now, fresh spy footage suggests that whatever it is, it might not be powered by a V8.

The 1500 TRX and its raucous 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that pumps out 702 hp (523 kW / 712 PS) changed the performance truck game. Nonetheless, as the current Dodge Charger and Challenger models are gradually being phased out and parent company Stellantis is increasingly emphasizing electrification, it was only a matter of time before Ram bid farewell to this formidable engine.

However, that doesn’t mean the death of the performance truck. A video obtained by Road & Track showcases a test mule of a widebody Ram 1500, flaunting an aggressive design, as it navigates the streets of Detroit.

Unfortunately, it may disappoint some TRX fans to see, or more to the point, hear the video. Judging by the sound emanating from the truck, it seems that Ram has no intentions of employing any type of V8 to propel it.

But it’s not all gloom and doom. When the truck accelerates from a standstill, and the driver gives it the beans, the engine note doesn’t sound too bad. In fact, it might even evoke hints of a BMW, which aligns with the rumors that have been circulating about this new powerplant.

Rumor has it that, much like the standard Ford F-150 Raptor, the successor to the TRX could be driven by a six-cylinder engine. To be precise, speculation points towards the potential use of Stellantis’ Hurricane inline-six to power this truck.

Already capable of generating an impressive 510 hp (380 kW/517 PS) and 500 lb-ft (678 Nm) of torque, the I6 makes a comfortable 60 hp (44 kW/61 PS) more than the standard F-150 Raptor. It will be interesting to see if Ram can squeeze any extra power out of the engine to get it a little closer to the outgoing TRX and the 700 hp (522 kW/710 PS) Raptor R.
