There was a time when Mercedes AMG decided that their “regular” models weren’t fast enough and that’s why they’ve started churning out Black Series editions of almost everything: from the SLK roadster to the CLK coupe and from the SL to the SLS.
Every Black Series model is special but there is something even more special about the Mercedes AMG SL65 Black Series.
The engineers at Affalterbach went the extra mile with his one, ditching the heavy retractable hard top and widening the whole bodywork to almost comical levels.
Under the bonnet lies a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 that makes 661hp (670PS) and 738lb-ft (1,000Nm) of torque, making the SL65 Black Series not only a true power monster but also the most powerful model Mercedes has ever made, this side of an AMG GT R.
0-60mph is dealt within 3.8 seconds while top speed is limited to 199mph In order to cope with all this power, the chassis features a fully adjustable coilover suspension instead of the active unit featured in the rest of the SL range, as well as a much faster steering rack.
Mercedes-AMG only made 350 SL65 Black Series models, so seeing one in the flesh will be a rather special experience. Doug DeMuro takes us for a tour around this lovely while specimen which is also one of the 175 SL65 Black Series models originally imported in the US.
