The first generation of the Audi TT is one of the most iconic designs from the German automaker’s history, gathering more and more attention lately despite its humble VW Golf MK4 underpinnings. This attention eventually led to the first restomod project by Niels van Roij Design, based on the Audi TT Roadster.

The project is still in the early stages of development, but Niels van Roij published a few teasers on social media, showing bits and pieces of the donor vehicle. The post says: “We are excited about a new client, bringing in a great new restomod project with an interesting briefing… For now, we only share a glimpse of the project, that is truly focussed around design – on many levels”.

The Netherlands-based design firm didn’t give away any other information, releasing a few teaser photos of the donor car.

The photos of the TT Roadster reveal a fat folder with plenty of notes, suggesting that the team could do a fair bit of work on the vehicle, and maybe change the design of some components like the cover for the retractable fabric top.

While we don’t know the customer’s brief, our guess is that they could take inspiration from the original 1995 Audi TTS Roadster concept. This one featured slimmer bumper intakes compared to the production version, and a custom leather upholstery inside the cabin. The donor car already comes fitted with the chrome-finished five-spoke alloy wheels which were admittedly the most fitting option for the TT.

We can’t be sure about the powertrain, which could be either the turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder or the flagship 3.2-liter VR6 quattro. In any case, Niels van Roij Design will keep us updated as the project comes closer to fruition.

Audi recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the debut of the first-gen TT which entered production in 1998, following the original concepts from 1995. The current third-gen model is scheduled to bow out of production by the end of the year, effectively ending the era of Audi’s ICE-powered sportscars. Below, you can see photos of the first-gen Audi TT Roadster in production-spec and the TTS Roadster concept.
