If you have a relatively new Audi A4, A5, A6 or Q5 parked in your driveway, then there’s a good chance that the following report concerns you.
The Ingolstadt-based carmaker said the recall affects some 1.16 million vehicles worldwide, out of which 342,867 are located in North America.
Certain Audi models powered by the 2.0-liter FSI gasoline engines, have an electric coolant pump that may malfunction. The part can either become blocked with debris from the cooling system, or it can short-circuit due to the excessive moisture.
In extreme cases, the cars could be engulfed by flames, but luckily, Audi says it’s not aware of any incidents related to this condition.
Affected are the 2013-2016 A4 Sedan and A4 Allroad, 2013-2017 A5 Cabriolet, Sportback and Q5, and 2012-2015 A6. Owners will be notified by the manufacturer starting on June 11, informing them of the situation, and a second notice will be mailed once the fuel pumps become available.
Subsequently, dealers will replace the defective parts with new ones, free of charge, as per a document shared by NHTSA.
The exact same group of vehicles were already called back early last year, because of an identical problem. However, Audi chose to update the software back then, and it seems that the repair wasn’t enough to completely eliminate the risk of fire.
